Boarding Up Harlow provides boarding up in Old Harlow and Newhall (CM17). A person answers the phone 24 hours a day, and we attend at any hour, including nights, weekends and bank holidays. If a window, door or shopfront has been broken, Call 01279 744 842 and give us your postcode and a quick description of the opening. We’ll confirm the address on the call and work out the arrival time from there.
Boarding older homes in Old Harlow
Old Harlow’s conservation appraisal describes Victorian and Edwardian homes around Park Hill, including well-preserved Edwardian terraces and larger detached and semi-detached houses. Bury Road and New Road have late Victorian and Edwardian terraces and semis too.
On older timber frames, we use non-destructive fixing where the frame allows, so the board holds firm without adding damage your repairer will later have to deal with. If a frame is too badly damaged to take fixings safely, we’ll explain the options before we start. Our window boarding page covers this in more detail.
Shopfronts on the High Street
Old Harlow High Street has a mostly continuous line of small and medium shopfronts, with shops, cafés, restaurants and professional services. A broken shop window usually means a wide opening at pavement level. That calls for exterior-grade plywood, typically 18mm, cut to fit, and often security or anti-tamper fixings so the board can’t easily be pulled off. See shopfront boarding for how we handle commercial premises.
Newer homes in Newhall
Newhall is a newer neighbourhood, and construction is still going on in parts of it. Windows and doors on modern homes are boarded the same way as anywhere else: plywood for larger openings, and OSB where the opening is smaller. The van carries boarding stock and fixings.
An example call
For example, a typical call might come from someone in an Edwardian terrace near Park Hill whose ground-floor bay window has been smashed overnight. On the phone we’d ask how many panes are broken, roughly how big they are, whether there’s a front garden or steps, and where the van could park. When we arrived, we’d clear the loose glass first. Then, if the timber frame was sound, we’d board each section with plywood using non-destructive fixings. If part of the frame had split, we’d talk through the choices before fixing anything to it.
While you’re waiting
- Keep people and pets away from broken glass and any unstable door or frame.
- Don’t go into premises that look unsafe, and don’t climb onto roofs or ladders.
- Photograph the damage only if you can do it safely.
- Have your postcode and access details ready for the call. Tell us about parking, gates and stairs.
- After a break-in, report it to the police and keep the crime reference number before you contact your insurer.
What you receive
You get openings that are made safe, with the work agreed on the call before we start. Afterwards we provide an itemised invoice, time-stamped before and after photographs, and a written statement of the work done. These help when you speak to your insurer, although the insurer decides what’s covered. Once the property is secure, you can arrange the permanent glazing or door repair in your own time.
We’ve been boarding up for over 10 years. We’re fully insured, with the certificate available on request, and DBS-checked.
What affects the quote
The quote is free and clear, and you get it on the call before any work begins. It depends on:
- the number and size of the openings
- height and access, such as upper floors, skylights or ladder work
- the materials and board thickness
- the fixing method
- whether a damaged door or frame needs securing first
- how much glass or debris needs making safe
Nearby areas
We also cover Church Langley and Great Parndon, along with the rest of Harlow.
